Animal Liberation Workshops have been taking
place in Austria since 2005
The idea behind these events is to reach people
who are concerned about animals, but don't know
how they can contribute to improving the situation
for animals. Since 2005 there have been ALWs
every two years in different Austrian towns
and cities which have proved to be a huge success.
This year is no exception; there have already
been ALWs in Linz, Marburg in Slovenia, Salzburg,
Graz and Innsbruck. Still to come is the Vienna
ALW on 31 October and 1 November. What can you
expect? The event consists of different talks
and workshops on various topics. Here's a taster:
- history of the alternative movement and
of the ar movement
- what is animal rights
- videos and discussions: activism, factory
farming, hunting, …
- direct action: blockades, hunt sabbing,
civil disobedience
- section 278a of the Austrian Criminal Code
and State repression against political activism
- demo marches, permanent demos, run-ins and
sit-ins
- how to run a campaign
- how to start an activist group
- individual campaigning and large organisations
- local groups introduce their projects
- undercover research
- researching animal abuse: factory farms,
animal research labs, slaughterhouses …
- history of successful campaigns
- vegan lifestyle
- doing your own monitoring of animal transporters,
markets, pet shops etc.
- arm chair activism
ALWs round off with a demonstration and in
addition you can expect some great vegan food.

By the way, just for the record, the
name animal liberation refers to the general
liberation of animals from human suppression
and exploitation, in the same way that women's
liberation describes the women's movement.
