Animal issues in school
Animal issues in school is one of VGT’s main activities.
Only by educating our younger generation to respect
animals can we hope to fundamentally change the way
our society will deal with animals in the future.
Protecting animals is one of the most important social
issues of our times.
Animal Protection through Education was brought to
life in 1974 in Graz, by the educationalist Charlotte
Probst (State Union of Animal Liberators – Graz).
From there it gradually spread throughout Austria
and beyond. In the fall of 1998, a special union called
‘Animal Protection through Education’ was founded
as a charitable organization. This union now coordinates
the project in all of Austria and supervises the expertise
of it's teachers and the quality of their instruction.
VGT offers education on animal protection through
it's Austria-wide project to all schools in the regions
of Vienna, Lower Austria and Northern Burgenland.
These programs are free to the schools as they are
funded solely through donations. We therefore rely
upon your donations.
We have recently shifted our focus to older students.
However, it seems that the teachers, especially high-schools
teachers, still believe that animal protection is
‘child’s stuff’ that does not interest students between
the ages of 15 and 18. They are completely wrong.
“Animal protection, and especially animal rights,
is now a common subject matter, which the scholar
field of philosophy, especially in the English speaking
countries, cannot anymore be imagined without. There
are over 250 academic publications in this domain.
Animal protection can therefore be presented and discussed
on the highest intellectual level”.
Animal protection teachers can be requested from
the project and are made available free of charge.
This subject matter can be dealt with in different
classes and from diverse perspectives, such as biology,
philosophy, German, English, etc.
